Four hotel workers have died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a food waste chamber at a hotel in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, officials confirmed on Sunday morning.
The deaths happened on Saturday night at a hotel on Dewas Road in Ujjain. District Collector Raushan Kumar Singh said two workers first entered the chamber to clean it, and when they did not come back, two more people went in to try to rescue them. All four died.
Police and rescue teams reached the site during the night. Officers gave CPR to the victims at the scene, and a medical team was kept on standby at the hospital. The four were taken to hospital by ambulance.
What happened
According to the District Collector, the chamber at the hotel was used for collecting leftover food and residual waste. Two people entered it for cleaning on Saturday night and did not return. Two others then entered the chamber in an attempt to bring them out. All four were overcome by the gas inside.
Ujjain Police Superintendent Pradeep Sharma said a gas leak inside the chamber appeared to have made the surface extremely slippery, which caused the workers to collapse. Others who entered to help also collapsed, but were pulled out and taken to hospital.
Reports differ slightly on one detail: some accounts describe the chamber as underground, while the police superintendent’s remarks describe an above-ground chamber. Officials have not yet clarified that point, and the exact sequence of events is still being established.
What officials have said
District Collector Raushan Kumar Singh confirmed the toll and said authorities were still gathering details about how the incident unfolded.
“It appears there is a tank for food waste; two individuals entered it, presumably for cleaning purposes,” Singh said. “Subsequently, two more people entered the tank in an attempt to rescue them. In total, it is reported that four individuals have lost their lives.”
Superintendent Sharma said police personnel worked continuously to revive the victims and that a medical team had been placed on standby. He added that further details about the circumstances were still being collected.
Early police remarks made during the rescue described some of those pulled from the chamber as being in critical condition. The confirmed death toll, as stated by the District Collector, is four.
What is still unclear
Several important details have not yet been made public. The names of the four workers have not been released, and the name of the hotel has not been published in official statements so far. The exact type of gas involved has also not been confirmed.
Officials have said only that toxic gas built up inside the chamber. What caused the build-up, whether safety equipment was available, and whether proper procedures were followed are all questions the investigation will need to answer.
Why enclosed waste chambers can turn deadly
Waste chambers are enclosed spaces, and that is what makes them dangerous. When food and other organic waste breaks down inside a closed tank, it can release gases that displace oxygen and are poisonous to breathe. A person who enters such a space can collapse within minutes, often without warning, and would-be rescuers face the same danger if they go in without breathing equipment.
That general danger is well known to safety experts, and it is why confined-space work normally requires ventilation, gas checks and protective gear. Whether any of those precautions were in place at the Ujjain hotel is not yet known, and this article does not assume it either way.
The incident has already raised questions about safety practices for workers who clean tanks and chambers in hotels and other commercial buildings. Lokmat Times, carrying the same agency report, noted that the deaths had raised serious questions about safety protocols.
What happens next
Authorities in Ujjain are investigating the exact sequence of events and the circumstances that led to the deaths. Officials have said further details will follow as the inquiry progresses. No action against the hotel management has been reported so far.
